Bollywood scores big at 57th national awards

Even as Malayalam film Kutty Srank enjoyed top honours (Best Film Award) at the 57 National Film awards, Bollywood had enough reasons to cheer, with Paa, 3 Idiots, Kaminey, Amitabh Bachchan, Amit Trivedi and Swanand Kirkire being among the winners.

Amitabh Bachchan won his third national award for his performance in R Balki’s Paa. He had earlier won the award for his roles in Agneepath and Black and is now tied with Kamal Hassan and Mammootty. Paa won the Best Make Up, Best Hindi Film awards and also won Arundhati Nag the Best Supporting Actress award.

Last year’s money-spinner 3 Idiots was awarded Best Film providing wholesome entertainment. However, the surprise winner was Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan’s Lahore, which released to good reviews but went unnoticed at the box-office. The film won the award for Best Film by a Debutante, and got Farooque Shaikh the Best Supporting Actor award.

Amit Trivedi won the Best Music award for Dev D. Swanand Kirkire won the Best Lyricist award for the song ‘Behti hawa sa thha woh’ from 3 Idiots, while Rupam Islam and Nilanjana Sarkar won Best Playback Singer awards in male and female categories.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey won special jury recognition along with a Malayalam film, Pazhassi Raja and Mammooty starrer Kutty Srank.

Other Hindi films to win awards were Well Done Abba (Best Film on social issues) and Delhi 6 (Best Film on national integration).
