Big star means more responsibilities: Director R Kannan

You don’t just need enough experience to cast a big star, but even the responsibility doubles, says Kannan.

Big star means more responsibilities: Director R Kannan

After having gained expertise for nearly 10 years by working under ace director Mani Ratnam, the manner in which director R Kannan operates is rather different. Post the success of his films, Jayam Kondan and Kanden Kadhalai, the director is elated about the response he’s received for his latest release, Vandhan Vendran.

The film is an action-adventure-thriller with actors Jiiva, Taapsee Pannu and Nanda in lead roles. “I’ve tried something offbeat this time and the manner in which the screenplay was treated is also different. As the name suggests, it’s about a protagonist who wants to win,” begins Kannan.

Having cast Jiiva, who’s now considered to be the most sought-after actor, post the success of Ko and Taapsee, whose debut film Aadukalam which won six National Awards, the director seems to be under pressure. He says, “When I signed them for my movie, both their films hadn’t released but I am quite  aware of their market value now. In fact, the success of Ko and Aadukalam was useful for me, in a way. Both of them were very cordial with me and helped complete my film sans any tantrums. I am truly impressed with their professionalism.”

Kannan, who has directed three movies in a span of four years, says that he is no hurry to make movies back-to-back. “I come from Mani’s school of film-making and my experience with him has taught me a lot more than just making films. I don’t believe in making two or three movies in a year, neither am I claiming to discover newer concepts in my films. No matter what the subject I choose, I believe that the entertainment element should not be missed. Audiences shouldn’t be tired after a watching a film — they should walk out of the theatre happily instead,” he explains.

After having worked with the newer breed of actors like Vinay Rai, Bharath and Jiiva, does he plans to rope in stars, we probe. “Of course, every director wants to work with stars like Ajith or Vijay. But in order to cast them, you need experience in the field and the ability to take on more responsibilities. With a big budget and a powerful team, your responsibilities double. However, I am keen on casting a big star in my next project,” signs off Kannan.
