Band 'bajao'!

Teddy Boy Kill, Jalebee Cartel, Shkabang etc….the list of funky band names in India is endless; we take a look at the stories behind their origin

Band 'bajao'!

Band names could come from anywhere —  from the initials of band members to spiritual concepts.

Take the case of electronica band from Delhi, Teddy Boy Kill. They picked their name from the 50’s Edwardian period where Teddy Boy represented conformance to a system. They were more interested in easing out, living life by their rules which the band disapproves. Hence, killing the Teddy Boy.

Adding another name to the club is Delhi-based band Jalebee Cartel. Arjun Wagale of Cartel says, “Once someone asked us to call our act by a name. I spontaneously yelled, ‘Jalebee’. Cartel came later with our brainstorming sessions.”

Then there is Delhi band Parikrama, whose name  comes from a Sanskrit word meaning orbital revolutions while Anushka Manchanda’s Mumbai band Shkabang is derived from the last four letters of her name — shka. Many things could influence the naming of a band including the musical style, personality of the members, attitudes and philosophies. Bangalore band Swarathma got its name from two Sanskrit words — swar meaning notes and athma meaning soul. Bands will always intrigue music lovers with the bizarre ideas behind their names.

More cases in point are Mumbai band Something Relevant, which wants to sing about subjects that are relevant, and Delhi bands Agnee — signifying fiery energy in their music — and Indigo Children — referring to children with special and unusual abilities.
