Avatar director James Cameron may compete against ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow at the Oscars this year.

Bigelow's film The Hurt Locker, based on the Iraq war, won at the Directors Guild of America awards.

Cameron and Bigelow were also pitted against each other for best director at the Golden Globes, with Cameron taking the prize, reports The Mirror.

The other films which have already featured strongly on major film nominations lists are Up In The Air, Precious, Invictus, Inglourious Basterds and An Education.

The list of nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced in Los Angeles.
