Art Garfunkel keen to record new songs with Paul Simon

Musician, Art Garfunkel has disclosed his desire to record new songs with Paul Simon, his folk co-star, after long-standing difficulties in their relationship.

The 70-year-old musician revealed his wish while speaking on BBC’s Today programme on Radio 4.

“It takes two to tango and I like to tango so count me in,” The Telegraph quoted him as saying.

Though he did say that Simon, who is the same age as him, would also have to be consulted.

“You’d just have to bring in the psychologist as the third member,” he said.

Since, the pair, whose hits include Mrs Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Scarborough Fair, have had repeated disagreements over the years, have agreed not to broach certain subjects when they meet.

However, despite their differences they still remain close.

“He’s part of my soul. That’s a very interesting friend and I don’t want to lose that friend.”

“God’s not into pop - he likes gospel,” Garfunkel said.

He also spoke of his music and how the two of them complemented each other.

“Paul Simon is a hell of a writer and he plays magnificent acoustic guitar. I sing pretty well and I taught Paul how to harmonise. You get rock and roll that swings while the lyrics make you think,” he said.

Garfunkel believed his voice to be a gift from God.

“I’m just thrilled to have this singing voice that’s been with me since I was five years old. It gives you one foot on Earth and one foot in the heavens,” he said.

Garfunkel attributed the music that the pair had made for helping him cope with depression, with which at times he struggled.

“There are times when my confidence is low that I remind myself of my past achievements - I put my headphones on and listen to how Scarborough Fair flows.”

He also divulged that he had read a poem he wrote for Simon at the songwriter’s recent 70th birthday celebration.
