Abhay Deol joins Junglistan

Actor Abhay Deol has joined the citizens of Junglistan, a Greenpeace initiative to garner public support for forests, in the forests of Mahan in Madhya Pradesh.

According to reports, these beautiful forests are threatened by coal mining. So, Abhay accompanied by a Greenpeace campaigner, went on-board a hot-air balloon which flew over these lush-green forests to spread an awareness about the cause.

Looking down at the vast forest, Abhay talked about the urgent need to save these forests. He said that allowing coal mining in Mahan will only open up the entire forest area to be destroyed for coal. His trip was pretty eventful. Apparently, some people from the companies that promote coal mining were not happy with all the initiatives to save the forests. So they disrupted the proceedings and Abhay had to leave.

Abhay says, “On board a hot-air balloon, I looked down upon the beautiful forests of Mahan in Madhya Pradesh. A breathtaking sight indeed, but the fact that coal mining threatens to destroy these forests made it disheartening as well. These forests will become a victim of government and corporate greed to extract more coal. Wildlife here will be lost. Air and water will be polluted and lots of people will be left without a livelihood.” Abhay further explains his decision to join this campaign and urges everyone to do the same. “Agreed, we need electricity and research has shown that we can get it through renewable energy sources. We still have a choice, the choice of telling our leaders to stop coal mining in our forests,” he adds.
