Global Shapers Ramya, Rohan Bopanna & Pankaj Advani get chatty

Three of the Global Shapers selected by the World Economic Forum — actress Ramya, tennis player Rohan Bopanna and cueist Pankaj Advani — also Bangaloreans, speak to DNA about what it means to them...

What does being a Global Shaper mean to you?
Rohan Bopanna & Pankaj Advani: It is a huge honour and we are glad to be recognised as individuals who can contribute to society as thought leaders.

As sportspersons, we have seen a lot of the world through our travels and have a deeper understanding of society and are glad that our experiences and insights can contribute to the global society.

Ramya: It’s a big, big thing for me — a responsibility that comes with the recognition of helping shape youth, who are often in a confused state of mind. It also feels nice that among all the nominations, I have been able to make the cut at an international level.

When you are entrusted with the responsibility of being an inspiration to the youth, how big a task is it?
RB & PA:
We think that our accomplishments and achievements till date have made us role models to a lot of the youth already. We have always been recognised as individuals who are determined, hardworking and highly accomplished - characteristics that youth across the world are encouraged to imbibe within themselves. We shall continue to do what we do to the best of our abilities.

Ramya:
Being recognised for such an honour by itself is a motivation. Not just as celebrities but as citizens too, we have certain responsibilities. But of course, being under constant public glare makes me even more conscious as a responsible person who is looked up to by so many.

Are you looking forward to the WEF meet at Davos?
RB:
2012 looks to be a very important year in my career and my priority as an active athlete would be to focus on my game. If the Davos forum does not interfere with the ATP schedule, I would seriously consider being in attendance there.

PA: I am glad that I could be one of the delegates at the WEF Forum in Davos and will have to look at my playing calendar to see if I can attend. If the forum does not clash with my play or training schedule, I’d be glad to be there.

Ramya: I’m really hoping to be there if my shooting schedules allow me to. I actually can’t stop reading and re-reading the official mail — not very many Indian actors have been privileged enough to represent India in such a way, globally.

What do you have to say to the youth in your own city, Bangalore?
RB:
Hard work and constant dedication and determination can get one very far in life. Never lose focus of the goals and continue to aspire to achieve them.

PA: Every individual is unique and one must never forget the uniqueness in oneself. Be oneself to the best ability - never aspire to be somebody else.

Ramya: Everyone has it in them to be a global shaper — it’s possible and all one needs to do is be at it persistently.
