‘Playback is the ultimate goal’: Singer Jai Taneja on his latest single and future plans

After the romantic Intezaar, Jai Taneja is back with another lovey-dovey song, Jaana Kahaan. The lead vocalist of Aawaaz tells us he wants to keep writing and composing for himself.

How’s the response been to Jaana Kahaan? Did you set out to try something different this time?

Jaana Kahaan is our next song after Intezaar that we released last year. Both songs have been written, composed and sung by me. Intezaar was a slow, romantic song so I wanted my next one to be upbeat and happy. The response has been unbelievable! The video crossed two million views in less than two days and was instantly picked up by radio stations. It is a great feeling to see your song travel and do well.

You write and compose your own songs. What genres do you want to explore when it comes to singles?

I really don’t want to limit myself to any genre and want to keep experimenting with my music. I write and compose my songs and I want to continue doing that.

You have your own band. What’s the plan ahead with that?

I formed Aawaaz in 2014 and since then, we have been doing private, corporate and institutional gigs all across the country. We have done more than 200 shows and we are the only band in India to have an international female artiste from Ukraine named Elena. She specialises in singing Hindi, English and Ukrainian songs. That is how we cover Bollywood, Sufi, Rock, Retro, English and Punjabi music.

I want to keep writing, composing and singing my own songs as I believe independent music is the future. We will keep releasing our own compositions and we’ll keep performing live as that will always be our first love.
