The 2016-17 award season kicked off with the 68th Emmy Awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on Monday. Game of Thrones juggernaut continued to roll as it took home 12 trophies including best writer, director and best show in the drama category.
FX's crime drama The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story swept the limited series category with nine wins including best supporting actor, best lead actress, best lead actor and best limited series.
Mr Robot's Rami Malek took home his first Emmy for a lead role in drama while Tatiana Maslany was finally awarded for her fantastic range of performances on Orphan Black.
Despite several good comedies in the run this year, Veep dominated the comedy category, perhaps because the show reflects the absurdity of the actual Presidential elections in the US. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won best comedy actress for the fifth time for her turn as Selina Meyer while Jeffrey Tambor won his second trophy for the Transparent.
In her acceptance speech, Louis-Dreyfus said, "Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary." Tambor called for more roles for transgender actors in a nod to the recent outcry in the transgender community over the casting of Matt Bomer as transgender in Mark Ruffalo's upcoming film Anything.
