Stars and creators of scores of comedies, dramas and variety shows gather in Los Angeles on Monday for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by former Saturday Night Live comedian Andy Samberg.
It was a night of several firsts but the night still belonged to HBO. While sentiment and critical acclaim favoured the stylish 1960s-era advertising show Mad Men, Jon Hamm was the show's solitary winner, the first and only acting Emmy for the show. Game of Thrones lead the drama category with 24 nominations and won a record 12 awards, including eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmy last week.
Viola Davis of How to Get Away With Murder won best drama actress, an award that has previously never been won by an African-American. Netflix's Orange is the New Black moved from comedy to the drama category this year and got a solitary win for Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren.
It was a big night for Amazon Studios's transgender comedy Transparent, with Jeffrey Tambor winning best comedy actor while Jill Soloway won best director. But it was HBO's Veep that swept the comedy category with wins for best writing, best actress, best supporting actor and best show. The show broke Modern Family's five year winning streak at the Emmys.
HBO's Olive Kitteridge swept the Limited Series category while Comedy Central's Daily Show with Jon Stewart gave a fitting farewell to its host, sweeping the Variety Series category.
AMC newcomer Better Call Saul, a spin-off of Breaking Bad, Showtime's thriller Homeland, Netflix's House of Cards, Downton Abbey and Emmy favourite Modern Family did not take home any awards.
