Since India is heavily investing in infrastructure, especially in mass transit systems, with 50 cities in India planning metro rail, it signals an improvement in connectivity and consequently the quality of life for citizens.

However, last-mile connectivity continues to be a problem even in metro cities. Now Delhi metro has teamed up with cab aggregators Ola and Uber to ease the woes of commuters. The Delhi metro network currently extends to over 317 km with 231 stations. Its daily average ridership is 25.38 lakh in 2017-18.

Earlier, too, the Delhi metro had tied up with various connectivity services like e-rickshaws and cycle-sharing services. But this is the biggest move so far with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation intending to allot space for cab aggregators.

Already 400 such zones have been identified at 210 metro stations. If one goes by the Ease of Moving Index 2018 report by Ola’s Mobility Institute, nearly 70 per cent of the public transport users depend on cabs, autos, and non-motorised transports.

Some even take their two-wheelers to the nearest station so that they don’t miss the train during morning rush hour. This shows that reaching the nearest place of mass transport system is a big concern. In fact, the key to popularising mass transit systems is to plug the gaps in last-mile connectivity.

It’s a matter of seamless mobility that will encourage a lot of four-and two-wheeler owners to keep their vehicles off the roads. Similarly, the Connect Delhi initiative, that proposes to cover various public transport modes such as buses, metro feeder services, gramin sewa, and rural transport vehicles to ensure frequent, reliable and affordable public transport facility can make life a lot easier for Delhi residents.
