Missives from Malvani

Malvani is a lower-income settlement in North Mumbai. The children work with Teach for India, a not-for-profit in education, to bring out their own weekly newspaper ‘Voices From Malvani’. They sent us their best editorials for Children’s Day.

The poor are getting poorer

India is a country with the largest number of millionaires but it also has the largest slums and population of people below poverty. I find this sentence funny but at the same time it is a very serious problem in India.

India has got freedom from the British but not from poverty and crimes of the world.

Poverty has been left behind by the kings and queens that ruled India before the British and the British took that to another level. They themselves lived comfortably while torturing the Indian people.

Today we see that the people who are doing jobs and businesses are fit and healthy but the people behind all this, the farmers who grow food for all of us, are not. They have all the land and crops but the land and crops that they have are not for them.

Rich people are becoming richer and the poor people are becoming poorer.

If the well off are getting all the comforts of life then why will they think for the people who have nothing because they will be too busy enjoying their life.

Even today all the good facilities are mostly accessible for the privileged people.

I think if it goes on in this way then there will be an increase in the number of privileged people and the underprivileged will grow less in strength.

Not only that, when they see the rich living life in luxury, this will cause them to want to desire to live like that and there will be migration of people from village to cities. This will give rise to slums and will result in more poverty.

In an extreme case there can be a revolt where the poor demand more facilities for example farmers can stop growing crops etc. and there will be a conflict between the people of the rural and urban areas.
I think we should all care for each other and we can do this by spreading awareness and also helping as much as we can so that such thing do not become real.
Imagine a world where we taught people to be good and do good.

Things that matter

For me, something that really concerns me is narrow-mindedness in today’s date.

We know our ancestors used to think like this because they were not literate but we still think like that today when there is topic like religion, or the sex of a child, or physical appearance, and many other things in the world.

It matters because due to this narrow mindedness people think negatively of each other.

For example, many people believe or say that all Muslims are terrorists or fight with them or at least have a prejudice about them and this kind of misunderstanding spreads more fighting and causes a lot of deaths.
This can only be corrected if people decide to reject this narrow-mindedness and give each other awareness.

Are we not going to help?

SABRIN

I would like to start by narrating an incident. Many times when we are sick, we go to hospitals.

A few days back my mother, my sister and myself went to a hospital for treatment. Over there, a disaster happened that I think was not good at all.

There was a boy of 16-17 years of age, standing in a line to take medicines and there were other people all around him.

Suddenly, he fainted (which we later came to know was due to high fever).

Not even a single person came to pick him up and take him to the doctors, though there were a lot of people. I am proud of my mother and sister who helped him up, called his parents and took him to the doctor.

Though the boy was not our relative or someone we know, it matters to me because the same thing can happen to someone else some other day.

Till when are we not going to help people?

This also shows the carelessness of the hospital staff because if they were doing their job properly then the boy would not be lying there.

For me, it is a shock.

I can presumably say that the patient might become serious, can take a long time to recover, or might even die if left like that.

As a student, I could at my best, send letters to the hospital authorities because I am sure that they want their staff to do a good job. In the end, it is important that people co-operate.

‘What can girls do?’

Zeenat

One of the main problems is that many girls are still not allowed to study after 10th standard.People still believe that ‘what can girls do? How much ever they study, one day they will have to go to their husband’s house and just do housework.’ But this is wrong. We girls or women have the strength or power of achieving anything in our lives and I wish to try and break this stereotype.

For example, this problem is in my house: My relatives are trying to convince or force my mother to stop my education after tenth grade, but I want to study. I want to achieve my goal. My dream of becoming a teacher and teach children and make my country, make my world, educated. We girls just destroy our lives, getting married, because our husband or mother-in-law, etc will not let us fulfill our dream. But when we get to fulfill our dreams, we just put in so much effort that we have the freedom of living our choice of life.

As a student, as a girl, I’ll try to talk to the parents of other girls, my parents, my relatives, who believe in this stereotyping and explain them the importance of girl’s education and girl’s freedom.

If they agree with me, I’ll ask them to help me whenever there is this kind of behavior anywhere so that I can explain that this is not right. We girls also have a life, a dream, that is to be fulfilled.

If together we explain to 10 people, then 10 to 15 and 15 to more and this way, after a period of time, there will be no girl left without an education.

Learning from cancer

Navaz

The main requirement is awareness and information. New information can change your outlook and your life. Someone at home is in desperate need of a little attention. Loved ones are special to you and you will pull out all the stops to help them. Think about how the person having cancer is feeling. If they know that they are going to die, they feel very scared, and if they know the cause then they can try to spread awareness about that to make people realize their mistakes such as bad habits like smoking.

Not all people can get treatment because it costs a lot of money. In the end, we should listen to them and sympathetic to them which will provide them comfort.

Think of natural resources

Shifa

Class VIII, gurukul EMS, Mumbai
What I understand is that now-adays in life, capital is more vital compared to anything. So, in the greediness of earning money, people are not thinking of the main things, that are natural resources. They do not realize that they are making their own future bad because if all the resources are over, they cannot be gotten again as they are limited.

Everybody wants to earn more money and as a result they are taking up secondary occupation and slowly primary occupation will be gone. Then we will not have a good life and once again we see that greediness for capital is the reason behind the destruction of the world. This is because, with the increasing pollution, lack of food etc., at a point of time, money will be of no value, and the poor will revolt against the rich who made money by exploiting the poor.
