Tapping technology to reach out to hundreds of CAT aspirants, the seven Indian Institutes of Managements and Prometric, their partner in conducting the computer-based Common Admission Test 2009 (CAT), uploaded a “how to apply for CAT” video on YouTube, a video sharing the website.

The YouTube video guides individuals about the steps to be followed to register online, acquire admit cards and fix test dates. “YouTube sounds like a good idea because we will be able to access the video online and get the required information regarding new procedures,” said Yuvika Sharma, an IIM aspirant.

Since this would be the first attempt to adapt the otherwise paper-pencil test to an online format, IIMs and Prometric are also hosting an IIM-CAT demo on their respective official websites.

These include tutorials and mock tests for aspirants. IIM-B, IIM-L and IIM-K have uploaded tutorial packages which indicate the time, format of questions (in the Yes and No form) and procedure to be followed when attempting the online CAT test.

The mock test shows that candidates have the option of attempting difficult questions, which they are uncertain about to return to later during the test to prevent negative marking. Aspirants can also register on the official websites of IIMs after
September 9.

Between September 9 till October 1, Prometric and IIMs will jointly host a helpline for candidates (1-800-103-9293) between 9am to 6 pm.

CAT 2009 is conducted by the IIMs; Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong.

The computer-based test will be of two-and-a-half hours duration and is slated to be held over 10 days, between November 28 and December 7. CAT results will be out on January 22.

“It’s high time the test went online. But I hope the test pattern and design doesn’t change too much. This would be my second attempt and I hope to make it to either
IIM-A, IIM-B or IIM-C,” said Abhishek B, a student.
