With 98.86%, Ellisbridge centre shines in Std XI science exams

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHEB) on Tuesday declared the results of the first semester exam of class 11 (science). In the first-ever semester system examination held in October this year, a  total 1,19,526 students had appeared in the exam and of them 1,06,437 students passed, putting the overall pass percentage at 89.05%. A student has to secure 33% of marks or more to pass the exam.

In Ahmedabad city, 92.94% students cleared the exam. While 9,886 students sat for the exam, 9,188 cleared it; 710 students were given 'Need Improvement' remarks. In Ahmedabad rural, 5,879 students appeared in the exam and 5,523 cleared it; 361 students got 'Need Improvement' remarks.

The students who got 'Need Improvement' remarks are those who have obtained less than 33% of marks. They will, however, be allowed to continue their studies in the next semester but will have to secure more than 33% marks before the 4th semester exam.

An official communiqué from GSHEB says that Ellisbridge centre in Ahmedabad produced the highest results at 98.86%, while Limkheda centre produced the lowest results at 34.51%.

District-wise, Rajkot secured highest results at 94.47% and Narmada the lowest at 57.30%. Officials say that there are 100 schools in Gujarat that secured 100% results and 14 schools secured less than 30% results. Around 211 students secured A1 grade and 2,669 students secured A2 grade.

There were 142 specially-abled students and four of them cleared the exam with the criteria of securing minimum 20% marks.

Soon after the results were out, students were for a shock to find that what they feared did not come true: there was not much difference in the marks obtained in chemistry, which they found tough, and physics, which they found easy. "Perhaps to avoid any controversy after the blunder in the chemistry paper, the board allowed liberal marks. But marks in the physics paper is disappointing for many," said a parent

GSHEB secretary KR Zanzrukia said that the papers are checked mechanically and there is no way of doing it liberally or otherwise. "Those who have doubt should go for paper- rechecking and the answer-sheet will be shown to them,'' he said.
