Weddings bring money to Bangalore college, holidays for students

Marriage season means holidays for students of this particular college. Yes, the institution affiliated to Bangalore University (BU) is running in a hall that also hosts public functions and wedding ceremonies. So, whenever there is a function, it becomes an official holiday for students.

Recently, DNA published a report about a state-affiliated school in the city that was running in a 3BHK flat. If that was a shocker, here are colleges that have even more interesting infrastructure.

The story about Maharana Prathap Institute of Management and Info Sciences came to light when the local inspection committee (LIC) visited the college for the renewal of its BU affiliation for the next academic session. The college-cum-wedding hall is located in Vasanth Nagar.

The panel members found the college running in a typical wedding hall. “On days when the hall is given to functions, the college announces holiday for students,” a member told them.

This issue came up for discussion in the special academic council meeting held on Tuesday. After the panel submitted a report on the college, the council decided not to re-affiliate it.
Not just one, there were about four to five colleges that were running without proper infrastructure and LICs have recommended not to re-affiliate them for the next academic semester.

A college-cum-driving school
A college named Divya Jyothi in Nelamangala has been functioning from a building in a residential area, where 80% of the building was rented to families. Besides, a driving school was also functioning from the building.

Hold on, there’s more. “Hill Side College, which was offering MBA courses affiliated to outside Karnataka universities, also had courses affiliated to BU. The same faculty members used to teach both the courses,” another panel member said.

OK, here’s the clincher. One college in Kolar does not even have a building. “When the committee tried to visit Sri Venkateshwara College for inspection, they found it hard to locate it. They then dialled the college number and asked for the way. The college authorities showed some other college building and tried to convince the committee members that it was theirs, but in vain,” said N Prabhu Dev, vice-chancellor of BU.

On Tuesday, over 30 committees submitted their reports at the meeting.

In another case, a member raised voice against the committee finalising reports without his notice. Baburao, part of the committee headed by AS Rayamane, alleged that four colleges were recommended for re-affiliation without his participation.

Following that, the varsity vice-chancellor decided to send a new committee to the four colleges and the council approved the same.

Meanwhile, a group of post-graduate students from the Bangalore City College has written to the vice-chancellor complaining about the college. The university has decided to inspect it.
