US film institutes eye desi pupils

In a bid to exploit an untapped market, several US-based film schools are now looking at tie-ups with Indian counterparts.

“In India, it is very hard for families to invest in media and film education. They would rather send their kids to engineering or medical school,” said Elizabeth Monk Daley, dean at the School of Cinematic Arts, attached to the University of Southern California.

Daley added that the university was looking at guiding film schools that want to “institute serious education in film”.

Meanwhile, The New York Film Academy (NYFA) has tied up with a Bangalore-based production house for an acting filmmaking workshop to be held in Mumbai between May 2 and May 28.

“Our faculty has been travelling to various parts of the world imparting film training with the latest cameras and film equipment,” said Jerry Sherlock, director of NYFA.

Earlier this month, Ron Burrus, an US acting coach had trained students at the Mumbai-based Stella Adler Studio of Acting (SASA). SASA, an acting school in New York, has given a licence to Bollywood filmmaker Rahul Rawail’s production company LCA Communications to open its Mumbai chapter.
