Gujarat Law Society (GLS) has once again proved its mettle by clinching seven out of 18 seats, uncontested, in the Gujarat University Court (senate). Among the 18 seats in the senate for which election was announced, 11 seats were for representatives of principals of GU affiliated colleges, two seats for representatives of managements of GU affiliated colleges and five seats for college teachers.

The GLS, which runs a number of educational institutes in the city, including schools and colleges, under the leadership of the Nanavati family, has a strong presence in the GU senate. Devang Nanavati, honorary secretary of GLS has been declared an uncontested winner on the management representatives' seat - and in the process continued to maintain the Nanavati family tradition for the third generation by winning the senate elections uncontested.

Nanavati senior, Sudhir Nanavati, executive vice president of GLS, has won the GU senate elections uncontested except on one occasion. He has served in the GU senate and executive council (syndicate) for more than three decades. Carrying the legacy forward, Devang Nanavati was also declared uncontested winner in his first-ever GU senate election. While elaborating on his ideas for university education and his role in GU administrative bodies, Devang Nanavati said: "I will definitely play a role in the senate and syndicate to tune the university education with the modern scenario. Education in India requires a lot of changes."

Cherishing his son's, Devang's, uncontested win, a proud Sudhir Nanavati said, "My father IM Nanavati also served in the senate and syndicate for more than two decades. I have worked in GU's top bodies for 34 years and now Devang has continued the tradition."

All the 11 seats of principals' representatives have been declared to have been won uncontested, among which four principals of GLS-run colleges were declared winners. Besides these, two teachers — Mayuri Pandya and Deepak Shah — both from Sir LA Shah Law College, have been have been declared uncontested winners in the law faculty.
