Research takes wings at Gujarat University

The number of students registering for doctorate in philosophy (PhD) with the Gujarat University (GU) has seen dramatic rise in last half a decade. The data presented during a meeting of the varsity's research cell suggest that number of students who registered for Phd in different subjects has increased to 208 in 2011 from mere 13 in 2005.

Vice-chancellor of the state's largest varsity Dr Parimal Trivedi believes that this rise is also due to GU's decision to introduce new subjects and the option to pursue research in these subjects. During last six years, the varsity has introduced new subjects like climate change, biomedical technology, space science, labour welfare, library information, diasporas, computer application, Jainism, etc.

"Number of students opting for research has increased by leaps and bound. The university had formed a research cell to promote research among students. Now, we are getting results. In coming two years, GU research cell will work to increase number of registration in PhD to 400 a year," said Trivedi.

He said, in total GU has 706 students registered for PhD. He added that the varsity has spent Rs10 cr for students and motivate them for research. Trivedi said that the varsity will also focus on quality of research at GU.
