Quiz tests Ahmedabad students’ scientific temper

Over 200 science students attended the Minaxi Lalit Science Quiz - 2009 held at the Ahmedabad Management Association hall at its Atira campus here on Friday. The quiz was organised by the Gujarat Science Academy (GSA), an organisation of scientists, technocrats and educationists, dedicated to disseminating scientific awareness among children and community.

The quiz was designed to measure the scientific attitude and interests of college students. Undergraduate students from various science colleges in and around Ahmedabad participated in it to show their talents and aptitude. Bhavan’s College stood first, taking away a shield, cash prize of Rs1,500 and a certificate, while St. Xavier’s came second, walking away with a cash prize of Rs900 and certificate.

“GSA is the premier organisation of scientists from Gujarat, having as its member top researchers in science and mathematics from universities, colleges and research institutions of the state. Our aim is to make students realise that they should take up careers in science, which is a fascinating and rewarding field,” said Dr JR Trivedi, honorary secretary, GSA.

The science quiz was followed by Minaxi-Lalit Science Test Awards (MLSTA) distribution function. The MLSTA is a state-level programme, being organised every year for each discipline in science both for undergraduate and post-graduate students in Gujarat.

Dr Parimal Trivedi, vice-chancellor, Gujarat University, handed over cash prizes, and certificates to all meritorious students. The programme was presided over by Prof Abhijit Sen, dean of the Institute of Plasma Research and the president of GSA. Prof SP Pandya, former director, PRL; Dr RN Vakil, director, Cept University and Dr JR Trivedi, honorary secretary, GSA, interacted with the participants and students.

“More than 250 eminent fellows and 25 associate fellows have been involved in a variety of activities pertaining to science education and research, and popularisation of science among students, teachers and the common masses,” said Prof SP Pandya, president, GSA.
