Pune University trying image makeover

The acting vice- chancellor of the University of Pune, Dr Sanjay Chahande, appears to be on a clean-up mission. He has given orders to transfer some 15 additional staffers from various departments to the examination department, which has been mired in controversy over alleged irregularities.

The transferred staffers include 10 peons and five clerks. The examination department came in the eye of a raging controversy after forged marksheets were issued to some Iranian students.
After the incident came to light, show cause notices were served on the deputy registrar and some staffers, following which two staffers were arrested. The issue got so much attention that the controller of examination (CoE), Shivaji Ahire, had to tender his resignation.

Chahande told DNA that the transfers were a part of an exercise to strengthen the department. Two days ago, an in-house meeting of CoE had taken place wherein various measures to improve the functioning of the department were discussed.

There are some staffers in the department, who have not been transferred for nearly 15 years. Chahande had asked for the list of such employees.

Although, Chahande earlier said that the transfers were an administrative process, these transfers have come at a time when the department is in news for all the wrong reasons.
