Pune students’ welfare is top priority: Sanjay Chahande

The new acting vice-chancellor (VC) of University of Pune, Sanjay Chahande, said that implementing good practices on the lines of prominent foreign universities and redressing grievances of students would be some of his priorities.

A 1988 batch IAS officer, Chahande, was speaking to media persons after taking charge as VC on Thursday. He has taken over from Raghunath Shevgaonkar, who has joined IIT-Delhi as its director.

Apart from discharging his duties as VC, he would also look after the affairs of Yashwantrao Chavan academy of development administration (Yashada) as its director general.

After taking charge from Shevgaonkar, Chahande met members of management council and academic council of the UoP and discussed the functioning of the varsity administration. According to him, his priority would be to examine and thoroughly understand the problems of students.

“I had been to some prominent foreign universities as a student. I will try to replicate whatever good I saw there. The welfare of the students will be given paramount importance,’’ he added.

Promising that he would try to facilitate better interface between the government and UoP, the new acting VC admitted that he is new to the varsity and has to learn the nitty-gritty of UoP’s functioning.
