Probe into unapproved courses soon

A day after DNA reported that more than 120 technical institutes in Maharashtra are running unapproved courses, the directorate of technical education (DTE) on Tuesday swung into action, saying an inquiry would be conducted into the issue.

SK Mahajan, director of DTE, said, “We will conduct an investigation into the matter, following which we will submit a report to the state government by the end of April.”

He said the directorate had conducted similar inquiries earlier on the institutes after they were found, by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), running unapproved courses. “But, there were some institutes in the previous list which had no proper address. These have been repeated in the new list. The joint director (DTE) has been instructed to once again conduct an inquiry into the matter.”

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena on Tuesday gheraoed Mahajan, demanding strict and immediate action into the matter.

The AICTE had in January put out a list of institutes which are running some unapproved courses. The list, which has been uploaded on the AICTE’s official website, names more than 320 such institutes across India, with 120 of them from Maharashtra - the largest from a state.

Prominent institutes in around Mumbai on the shame list are Atharva College of Fashion and Art (Malad), Elphinstone College, ITM Institute of Financial Market, (Navi Mumbai), Vasntdada Patil Institute of Management Studies (Sion).
