Now, get Mumbai’s CPS degree in your own state

Here is good news for specialty medical education aspirants, who might not be able to get admission to post-graduate specialty courses in the state due to limited seats and tough competition. The state government has approved the diploma and fellowship courses run by College of Physicians and Surgeon (CPS) of Mumbai. Doctors having a diploma and fellowship of CPS can be registered by Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) and will also

be able to practise in the state. Hospitals in the state will also be allowed to conduct diploma courses as per CPS curriculum.

State health minister Jaynarayan Vyas said, "There is dearth of specialty doctors in the state, especially in rural areas. However, apart from increasing the number of medical colleges and their seats in the state, we are also approving the medical courses offered by reputed institutions like CPS of Mumbai. Pass-outs from this institute will be registered in the state by GMC and they can also practise in Gujarat."

The government has issued a notification on October 11 this year, where it has approved as many as 13 diploma courses and 10 fellowship courses in various specialties.

Sources in the state medical education department said that CPS and the courses offered by it have already been recognised in the Indian Medical Degrees Act 1916.

"Now, hospitals run by public or private trust as well as the multi-specialty corporate hospitals can apply to CPS for starting diploma courses," said sources.

Sources added, "A team from CPS conducts inspection for infrastructure and available resources. Based on this, CPS decides to approve the hospital to conduct the course. It offers two-year diploma courses and three-year fellowship courses. However, fellowship courses can be conducted only by medical colleges."

Presently, there are 595 seats for post-graduate medical courses like MD and MS in government-funded medical colleges and 300 seats in private medical colleges in state.

The fee in government-run colleges is around Rs15,000 while private colleges charge anything between Rs13 lakh and Rs27 lakh for various specialty courses.
