Now, Ahmedabad municipal schools adopt ‘fun way’ to make learning easy

Education without burden, subject-specific teaching and no homework - this will most likely appear the description of a privately-managed elite school.

However, the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board (AMSB) has taken up an initiative that promises to make education an attractive proposition for the most underprivileged children - by means of an initiative called ‘Pragnya’.

A pilot project, ‘Pragnya’ has already been introduced in two city schools, one each in Sabarmati and Amraiwadi areas.

As part of the initiative, the teachers of schools have started interacting with the students’ parents, and most seem very convinced of the idea.

‘Pragnya’ aims to cover 225 government-run schools this year, increasing to a whopping 25,000 next year. “Under the scheme, children will be given no homework, and lessons will take place through a play-way method,” said AMSB administrative officer Lagdhir Desai. Students will be taught in well-lit, airy classrooms equipped with softboards, and provided with special educational tools as well.

Desai said that after Sabarmati and Amraiwadi, there is a proposal to introduce the system in at least two schools of every ward. “The Teaching Learning Method (TLM) material used by the teachers under the scheme is very attractive,” he said.

Desai is of the opinion that home work often keeps students from attending school regularly. “However, this project will actively involve the parents, make classroom sessions more interactive and add to the joy of teaching,” he said. Teachers will also be made accountable in this exercise.
