Mood on Ahmedabad's campuses upbeat; pay packages set to rise

The mood on the campuses of Ahmedabad’s elite institutions of learning is upbeat. Job placements indicate that the economic scenario has begun to change for the better and employers are likely to offer big packages again to graduates following the improved position in the employment market.

Several institutes have already started the process of final placements of their students and at all the establishments it has turned out to be a positive state of affairs.

While companies are responding to the placements with a greater degree of enthusiasm, they have also brought with them a good number of offers and better incentives.

There is the feeling of high expectations at IIMA - the most esteemed management school in the country — while India’s top design institute, NID, which had its placements done in December, has proved that the trend in the job market is
fast improving.

Seventy companies visited NID in December and 80% students were placed immediately with the average salary being Rs six lakhs.

At MICA, DAIICT and NIFT too the outlook seems very heartening.

The placements at MICA are revealing. Last year the highest salary offered was Rs 12 lakhs. This time it has shot to Rs 18L.

At DA-IICT it rose by more than 10%. About 80% of the 290 students were placed in comfort zones with averge salaries
hitting Rs7 lakh.

Great Placement Bazar

MICA and NID have already had their placements done and  the salary figures are higher  than last years IIMA authorities say that recruiting firms have been coming forward with greater energy this time as job requirements are relatively higher.

At the country’s premier design school, students have got pay packages averaging Rs6 lakh. Last year recruiters from 30 companies came to the institute; this time, the institute has managed to attract 70

IIMA

While the final placements of the PGP, the flagship course of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), is yet to begin, its lateral placements for students with minimum experience of 1.5 years have already begun from December. With more than 10 job offers including offers for top managerial positions already on the table, there has been a positive indication for better work opportunities this year. Faculty and Placement coordinator of IIMA, Saral Mukherjee said, "The placement scenario this year is much better than the previous year. This time our placement will be held in cluster system. Compared to last year, job requirements are higher this year."

NID

The campus placements in the National Institute of Design (NID) recently got over for this year.  The institute has placed around 80% of its total number of students this year. While around 30 companies visited the campus last year, this year more than 70 took part in the recruitment process. "The placement was much better this year. Firms have recruited a higher number of students with better packages this year. Most of the students got a package above Rs6 lakhs per annum," an NID  spokesperson said. "After the main placements that just got over, we keep our recruitment going on through the website. So we will be getting more placements as well."

MICA

Placements in Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad (MICA) got over on January 25 and the highest package shot up to Rs18 lakhs this year from that of Rs12 lakhs last year. Director of MICA Ashok Ranchhod said, "Looking into the context of recession, the placement is definitely very good this year. While 113 students participated in the placements this year, we have achieved more than 90% placement in a span of one week. Other than the usual companies, Gujarat government had also come to recruit our students this year." "It is a positive development and has emitted positive vibes upon the students of the next batch as well," said Ranchhod.

DA-IICT

Talking about the better placement season this year, a final year student of the DA-IICT Jayesh Gumber who is also the student placement convener said, "The average package offered to the students have gone up to Rs3.55 lakhs this year which is an increase of 10% than last year in the institute." The placement of DA-IICT is conducted in two phases. The second phase started in December. Of around 290 students of the institute taking part in the placement this year, 80% of the students have been placed so far with the highest package of Rs7 lakhs till now. Gumber said, "Placements are yet to be over and the highest package is expected to rise further."

GNLU

The campus placement at GNLU is also witnessing  good placement season this year. While the procedure is yet to be completed, more than 30 students have already bagged good positions so far. With recruiting from corporate houses coming to the campus in good numbers, the institute's students are having a busy schedule attending written tests and interviews. Many of the university's students have also received pre-placement offers as well. Out of the institute's 160-odd students who will be graduating this year, many have opted out of the placement and decided to for higher studies. Since it is a law school, many opt to start their own firms.
