Making science fun for young students

With the aim to instil a love for science among students, the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium has lined up six programmes this summer vacation on the premises.

The programmes, organised by Bangalore Association for Science Education, are designed for students of all ages and are a mix of activity and lecture series.

“Our tiny tots programme is one of the most popular courses offered. It is for students from class III to V. The programme is activity-based and will have the children taking part in model-making exercises,” said Dr BS Shylaja, director of the planetarium. The first batch began on April 3 and will end on April 14. If there is a demand, another batch would start from April 18, she added.

For older students, it is all about creating interest in research. “For high-school students, we offer an intensive summer course, wherein a theme is selected and explored from various perspectives. This year we have chosen ‘atmosphere’ as the theme. We will have meteorologists, physicists, chemists and space scientists delivering lectures on the on the significance of atmosphere,” added Shylaja. The course is slated to start on April 18 and will end on May 5.
For older pupils

For students who want to get their hands dirty by getting involved in various projects, Base Camp, starting on April 17, is ideal.  “There are senior and junior batches and through experiments they will be taught science,” added
Shylaja.
