All police constables and officers of the Maharashtra police will now get an opportunity to seek higher education.

A memorandum of understanding on a bachelor’s degree in arts (BA) in police administration for the constabulary, and a master’s in business administration (MBA) in public policy and management, was signed by the director general of police D Shivanandan and Dr Krishnakumar, the vice-chancellor of the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra open university (YCMOU) on August 13 in Mumbai, followed by a formal announcement on Tuesday.

The academic requirement for the students is to have pass their Std 12 exams.

Krishnakumar said the students would be provided study material and would receive assistance at 55 district headquarters. Director of the Maharashtra police academy Sanjay Barve said the fees by the YCMOU were nominal, and 135 of the 390 cadets at the academy had enrolled for the course.
