Less than 70% in Maharashtra HSC: Forget getting into college

Experts advise average students to grab a seat wherever possible.

Less than 70% in Maharashtra HSC: Forget getting into college

Is your score in HSC less than 70%? Then you can forget getting admission into a reputed city college. There was no third merit list in most reputed colleges as the seats are already full. Some others declared the list to fill in the minimal number of vacant seats with almost no drop in the cut-off percentages from the previous merit list.

The ongoing degree college admissions are no cakewalk, putting the top-rung colleges out of reach for average performers in HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate). Experts tell such students to grab a seat wherever possible in order to secure their academic year.
Most of the well-known colleges in the city are already full. While St Xavier’s College was full just after the declaration of first merit list, there was no third list for Dahanukar College as well. Colleges like Jai Hind and Hinduja declared the third merit list only to fill 10 to 15 vacant seats in different courses with marginal drop in the cut-off marks.

Dr Madhuri Pethe, principal, Dahanukar College said, “We did not put up third merit list as we are already full. I feel students who have not been able to secure their names in any of the lists yet should focus on getting admitted to smaller colleges now.”

Dr TA Shiware, principal, Hinduja College echoed Pethe’s remarks when he said, “Students who have scored bellow 70% in HSC have few chances to get admission to reputed city colleges. I will suggest to such average performers to grab admission wherever they manage and not be very choosy.” At Hinduja too, the third list was out to fill very few vacant seats.  “We had only eight seats vacant for BFA (Bachelor of Finance and Accounts), and 10 seats for BMM (Bachelor of Mass Media) and 12 for Banking, based on which 3rd merit list was out. As expected the cut-off did not drop significantly, but we are certain that these seats will be filled and there will be no need of another merit list”, told Shivare.

Dr Kirti Narain, principal, Jai Hind College said, “At our college, the Commerce second list was closed at 78% and even the third list had same cut-off. We have come out with a longer list and are expecting it to be filled before there is time for any more merit list. High results have made it really difficult for us to accommodate all students.”
