Over a month of anxious wait for the results of the Indian Institute of Technologies-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) has, finally, come to an end.

This year, about 4.68 lakh candidates fought for the 9,600 seats in the prestigious institutes across the country through the exam, the results of which were announced at 9am on Wednesday.

Announcing the results, director of IIT-Kanpur Prof Sanjay Govind Dhande said that 13,602 students have passed the entrance test. The number of students who appeared this year was 30,000 more than last year's figure, a rise of 6.5%.

About 6,000 candidates from Karnataka took up the test on April 10 from as many as 1,051 centres in 131 cities. Of them, a huge chunk of about 4,000 were from Bangalore. Adithya P Gaonkar of Vijaya Composite PU College emerged as Bangalore topper, securing the 151st rank at all-India level. He underwent training at BASE. Adithya would choose between IIT-Bombay and IIT-Madras. “I am very happy right now. I would be taking up either Electricals or Physics.” For the first time, students will get to avail their scanned answersheets online from June 4.

At the summit
Hyderabad lad and IIT-Madras zone aspirant Immadi Purudhavi Tej topped the examination followed by Shubham Mehta of IIT-Bombay zone.

Shyamak Reddy and Burle Sai Kiran from Madras zone grabbed the third and fourth ranks, respectively, while Nishith Lohati from Bombay zone secured the fifth rank. Sumedha Garg from Roorkee zone topped among girls with an all-India ranking of 12. Junga Varun and Ashish Sonone topped the OBC and SC categories, while Pratyush Nalam topped in the category for Physically-disabled candidates.

Bombay zone topped with a total of 3,336 candidates followed by Madras zone, which recorded a total of 3,126 successful candidates. Delhi zone stood third with 2,138 successful candidates.

Kanpur, Kharagpur and Roorkee zones achieved fourth, fifth and sixth spots, respectively, while IIT-Guwahati zone recorded the lowest number of successful candidates with a total of 597.

Dhande said that the first list of seat allotment will be uploaded on IIT-Kanpur's website on June 21 while the second list will be issued on July 6. Counselling would be conducted online.

IIT- Kanpur was the nodal agency to conduct the examinations for the year 2011. A total of 4,68,240 candidates had appeared for the examination.

BANGALORE TOPPERS
Deepak Narayanan, who got trained at ACE Creative Learning Institute, secured the 229th rank at the all-India level. Aishwarya P, his batchmate, was close to him at 241. Aishwarya wants to join IIT-Madras and pursue Electricals or Computer science. “I am also expecting a good rank in AIEEE, but my first preference is, however, IIT-JEE.” She was a student of the National Public School, Bangalore, and recently cleared the Class 12 Board exams. Sidharth Gupta, who secured the 516th rank, said: “The focus that I had and excellent guidance that my teachers provided helped me crack the test. I am thankful to my parents, my school and ACE.”

Varsha S, who got trained at FIITJEE, secured the 430th rank in the all-India level. Sanjay Moudgalya, who was placed at 510, said, “I underwent a two-year integrated programme. The training which they gave helped me secure this rank and I am very happy.”
