‘India’s met training model is best’

Canadian meteorology official Kent Johnson says he wants to replicate the model.

‘India’s met training model is best’

When meteorologists from all over the world descended upon Pune to attend World Meteorological Organisation’s 25th
session of education and training meet, it was time for Canada to learn a few lessons from India.

Chief of aeronautical meteorology in Canada Kent Johnson said he would replicate India’s meteorology training model in his country. He said, “India is leading in meteorological training in the world. The quality of training it provides is best and the cost is less. This can happen because various departments come together to give training.’’

Johnson was in Pune for a week-long session of education and training meet at the National Meteorological Training
Institute.

Talking to DNA, Kent who is very happy to visit India, said, “India is the best place to learn meteorology as there is a collaborative approach from all fields of meteorology, climatology and hydrology. This gives a complete approach to the study. This does not happen in other countries and I will be trying to replicate the model in Canada.’’

“This is a good way to train as collaborative approach allows people to comprehensively understand the subject. Earlier, people from different branches did not even speak to each other. Now, the scenario needs to be changed and India leads this to produce better experts at this regional centre,’’ Kent said.

Stating that India leads the world in terms of forecast, because of its indigenously made surface instrumentation, Kent opined, “As far as I know, Pune centre is the only centre in the world that designs, engineers, manufactures, calibrates and controls quality of equipment on their own and this is a big asset for IMD.’’
