Indian students have bagged three silver and one bronze medals at the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) which concluded today in Tokyo.

"In the IChO, over 270 students from 68 countries participated and all the Indian participating students secured medals," Prof Vijay singh, national co-ordinator, Science Olympiad said.

Diptarka Hait from Kolkata, Nikunj Umesh Saunshi from Mumbai and Surendra Kotra from Hyderabad won silver medals while Amit Panghal from Sikar, Rajasthan won a bronze medal.

These four students were selected from 30,000 students across the country in a three-tier process and were given training before the IChO at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) of TIFR which is the nodal centre for Science Olympiad, Singh said.

The team was led by two group leaders Dr Lakshmy RAvishankar, department of chemistry, Vaze College, Prof Radha Jayaram, department of applied chemistry, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai.

One scientific observer, Dr Pradeep Deota, applied chemistry department, faculty of technology and engineering, MS University of Baroda also accompanied the students to Tokyo, Singh added.

The medal winners will be felicitated tomorrow at the HBCSE.
