Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad hikes tuition fee by Rs1.2 lakh

The IIMA has decided to increase total fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) course this year too. The fee for the two-year flagship course of the institute has been increased from Rs12.5 lakh to Rs13.7 lakh for students of 2010-12 batch who will be joining the institute this year.

Rs13.7 lakh will be the total fee - Rs6.6 lakh for the first year and the balance for the second year. The fee includes all costs, except food charges. Last year, the fee for the two-year PGP programme was increased from Rs11.5 lakh to Rs12.5 lakh.

“The fee amount has been arrived at after taking into account the significant increase in costs due to the implementation of the sixth pay commission's recommendations as well as general rise in operating costs due to high inflation in the economy,” says a press note issued by the premier B-school.

Fee hike issue was on the agenda of the governing council, which met on Saturday. The financial council of the institute presented data related to cost and inflation. The discussion was carried forward to a meeting on Tuesday and after discussion the institute declared the final figures.

Speaking to DNA, a highly-placed official said, “There has been an agreement in the board meeting that the institute's fees should be increased in proportion to inflation figures.”

The institute's communication also said, “IIMA would continue to provide fee waiver to students based on the student's family income. In the financial year 2009-10, a total of 41 students were educated at IIMA absolutely free.”

This year, IIM Bangalore has increased its fees from Rs11.5 lakh to Rs13 lakh, IIM Kozhikode from Rs9 lakh to Rs10 lakh while other IIMs are also considering an increase in fees.
