Gujarat varsity hosts international meet on stats, maths

For the first time in the history of Gujarat University, the department of statistics and mathematics has organized a three-day intellectual meet - International Conference on Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The conference, which has participation from around 300 delegates, started on Friday.

At the inaugural ceremony, minister of state for energy Saurabh Patel, GU vice-chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi, head of the department Dr Rajshri Bhatt and others were present.

Patel told students that statistics and mathematics are crucial subjects. "Today RBI governor has declared that interest rates will remain the same. You can take such important decisions for India only if you have deep knowledge of statistics. However, at this stage, it is imperative if students also take interest in research and write more and more papers on the subject that could help society," he said.

Bhatt said that science is developing at an explosive rate and statistics and mathematics are key techniques of modern science and their use has become indispensable in all phases of human endeavour.
