Gujarat University’s ‘computer on wheels’ programme

In the next two months, Gujarat University (GU) will introduce a unique service for kids, youth and the elderly to impart fundamental computer education.

At a cost of Rs30 lakh, the university will launch an ultra modern van, 'Computer on Wheel' (COW) which will be equipped with latest computers, servers, satellite connectivity and LCD monitors.

According to GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi, "This computer mobile van programme will be beneficial for all housewives, elderly, physically handicapped and those who wish to learn the basics of computers."

The computer van can accommodate 23 students at a time and they will be given training for six continuous days.

The van will have a permanent teacher, who will train the students about e-mail, operating systems, net surfing and essential terminologies.

Trivedi elaborates, "The fee will be as low as Rs100 for a six-day course. The students will also be given a certificate after the completion of the course."

The computer van will be equipped with broadband mobile connectivity which will enable fast internet access for all the 23 students simultaneously.

They will also be provided with written study material during the course. If a housing society wants to avail of this service,
Gujarat University will send them the van at no extra cost for the duration of the course.

This unique initiative is partially funded by a grant given by Member of Parliament Kirit Solanki.
