Girls outshine boys yet again in medical entrance test

Girls of the Marathwada region, which hit the headlines for skewed sex ratio and illegal sex-abortions, created history on Friday.

In the MHT-CET results declared on Friday, 22.32% of girls cleared the test in the medical category. Only 13.66% boys could get into medical this year.

Director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER, which conducted the MHT-CET) Pravin Shingare, said: "Girls have outshone the boys in Marathwada region. This has a lot of social significance as the same region is known for poor sex ratio and illegal abortions of female foetuses."

Girls have outshone the boys in three regions categorised in MHT-CET. In Vidharbha, 15.24% girls have qualified the exam and in rest of Maharashtra the figure is more or less same.

According to DMER, 3,34,716 candidates appeared for MHT-CET. Out of this 2,13,884 were appeared for health science courses this year and 28616 have qualified for MBBS and BDS courses. The intake capacity in 18 government colleges in MBBS courses is 2060 while in dental 240 seats are available in four dental colleges.

Admission in BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, Physiotherapy, nursing, occupational therapy courses are also done through MHT-CET. Overall percentage of passing in health sciences course has increased from 12.02% in 2011 to 13.27% this year. In 2010, the percentage was 15.23%. The admission process for health sciences courses will begin from July3.
Mark sheets will reach colleges on June14.

After the MHT-CET result was declared, out of 2,80,042 candidates who appeared for engineering admissions 1,34,275 have qualified from the open category and 1,45,767 have qualified from reserved categories.  Admission procedure will start from June 18 or 19.
