Fergusson College comes alive with an array of colourful fests

Fergusson College has been bustling with as many as 16 departmental fests, an annual festival, celebration of days and an international students’ event.

The three-day intra-college festival, Oorja, concluded on Monday. Oorja is an
annual event organised at Fergusson and this year it was sponsored by the alumni of the college.

There were around 35 events consisting of drama, dance and music, integrated into the fest. The fun and frolic was contagious and students participated enthusiastically in all the activities.

This year, the theme for Oorja was ‘Desi Tadka’. While explaining the concept, event head, Pratik Navalkar said, “We wanted to depict the different cultures and religions in India. We had, in fact, taken out a rally on the first day where everyone was dressed in Indian outfits. We also designed the competitions and games keeping this theme in mind. We included all the dance forms to bring in a variety.”

Oorja also saw performances by city bands. One such group was V Groovers, which performed a Western dance. Band leader, Prakash Gawli, said, “It was a fabulous experience performing at Oorja. The energy of the crowd was mind boggling. We loved performing for such an enthusiastic crowd.”

On Sunday, navy commander (retd) Deepak Naik conducted an interview of police inspector Bhanupratap Barge and former mayor Vandana Chavan. Oorja concluded with a kite-flying session for students and teachers on account of the recent Sankrant festival.

As part of the departmental fests, the English department staged RK Narayanan’s play Father’s Help and held an original poetry recitation competition.

The psychology department came up with a handwriting analysis event, while students of the mathematics department went all over the campus promoting maths as the most interesting and simple subject.

Students also celebrated Traditional Day and Tie & Sari Day recently. On February 2, the international students’ festival, Panorama, will be the culmination of this festive spirit. Panorama is a special celebration of India’s ties with foreign countries and will include national dance performances by foreign students.
