Engineering marks not sole criterion for employment

If you have not scored high in the 10th and 12th grades, finding employment via campus placements in engineering colleges may prove tricky.

With recruiters across college campuses deciding to place a certain degree of importance on those examinations, marks scored in engineering papers will no longer be the sole criterion for selection.

Sources said most companies that visited campuses this year were looking out for students with a good track record in academics.

“It is a part of the filtration process. Earlier, only two to three reputed companies used to indulge in this practice. But now it is being adopted by many,” said a placement officer with a city-based engineering college.

M Vijaydev, placement officer with the MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, nodded in agreement. “Now, they prefer to deal with students who have secured more than 60% in their 10th and 12th grades,” he said.

However, RVCE placement officer NS Narahari said this was not a very good idea. “These examinations are very different in nature.
Those who have done well in 10th and 12th may not necessarily be that good in engineering college, and vice versa.”
