Economics school a closed chapter: Bangalore University V-C

A senior member of Bangalore University (BU) has blamed the BU vice-chancellor (V-C) N Prabhu Dev alleging that he has considered the Bangalore School of Economics (BSE) as some sort of rehabilitation centre.

Clarifying the accusation, Dev wrote to the media. “No Sir, I do not require a rehabilitation centre. I have been humiliated and I am hurt,” he stated in the letter.

“BSE is a closed chapter,” he said.

“My best wishes to the section of the syndicate and the academic council to revive the project. I do not know the stand they are taking right now about the land allotment,” he said.

He requested Dr Sitaram Jindal to get the ‘matter clarified’ so that no more issues crop up at a ‘later stage.’

“I request Dr Jindal to identify an able, intelligent person among this group, which includes the new registrar, only to facilitate smooth revival of the project. It looks like this group wants a glorified department of economics rather than a school of economics which is an institution of excellence. It is for Dr Jindal to decide,” Dev said.

The V-C has been accused of not being transparent about the proceedings of the School of Economics. “I have been accused of taking a unilateral decision and of keeping the academic council and the syndicate in the dark about the establishment of BSE. The whole exercise seems to be a sabotage of the establishment of the BSE,” he said.

On Friday, a section of the syndicate and academic council members said that they have sought an appointment with Dr Jindal in the two or three days. The members said that they were always keen about such projects. However, procedures and protocols were not followed while going about it.

“We are open to the other industries helping us as well. We are keen on Jindal too; otherwise other donors may not come forward if this deal doesn’t go through,” said a member of the academic council.
