'DNA' impact: Board to set right Hindi book bloopers

Come July 25, the state board of education’s magazine will help Class IX students make sense of their Hindi textbooks.

After DNA revealed on July 7 that over 80 mistakes had cropped up in Class IX Hindi textbooks following the revision of all syllabi this year — except that of mathematics and science, which were upgraded last year — the Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education (MSBHSE) is going to send corrections to schools through the latest issue of its magazine, Shikshan Sankraman.

Several Hindi teachers had complained about the large number of mistakes, ranging from typographical, grammatical and factual errors to wrong definitions, in the new textbooks.

Sarjerao Jadhav, chairperson of MSBHSE, told DNA on Monday that the board will now take swift action to rectify such mistakes. “We will not be able to recall the textbooks as they are too many of them. But in the July 25 issue of Shikshan Sankraman, we will print the corrections.”

Jadhav reasoned that bloopers are bound to creep in the first batch of textbooks which are printed right after a change in syllabus. “After we read about these mistakes in the paper, we have set up a committee to examine the textbooks once again. Corrections will be made. These corrections will be printed in the textbooks next year. In the meantime, we will inform schools through the magazine.”

Errors in other textbooks will also be rectified soon, the board has assured.
