BU to fix boundaries to keep squatters out

Good fences make good neighbours and the University of Bangalore is going to identify its boundaries for better safety and privacy.

This follows a report that 227.45 acres of university land has been encroached.

BC Mylarappa, registrar (administration), conducted an inspection of the university along with syndicate members on being informed that so much land had been encroached.

The report was prepared by Prof TJ Renuka Prasad, special officer for land protection, along with GS Chandan, research scholar of department of geology, of Bangalore University.
According to the report, of the 1319 acres of university land, 227.45 acres had been encroached.

The university has leased out 212.8 acres to Indira Gandhi Art foundation, regional English training centre, NAAC and National Law School.

At NGEF Layout, one of the encroachments, the inspection team found cigarettes, liquor bottles and condoms strewn around a room. The locals complained to them that illegal activities were going on there.

Mylarappa said the room would be demolished in three days.
On fixing boundaries, he said: “We will form a task force cell, appoint an experienced official, probably from the revenue department, to pursue the cases and to undertake a giant survey. We will invite BDA revenue officials for joint inspection and for fixing the boundaries.”

“During inspection, we found illegal activities going on in some places,” he said.

Bangalore University’s vice-chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev said a task force had been set up to look into the issue.

“We will look into legal action. If there is any new encroachment, we will have to look into it. Some cases are already in court,” he said.
