Supreme Court gives nod to Medical Council of India for common tests for MBBS, PG courses

The Supreme Court (SC) lifted a major load off the shoulders of MBBS aspirants on Monday as it gave a green signal to a common entrance test (CET) for admission to undergraduate medical courses in colleges across the country.

The decision is expected to drastically reduce stress level among students aspiring to become doctors.

SC ruled that Medical Council of India (MCI) was free to frame rules for the test. A bench headed by justice RV Raveendran said the government did not need the court’s approval for framing rules and regulations for the examination.

An MCI source said the test would start next academic session.

MCI wanted to launch the examination much earlier, but could not since many state governments were opposed to it.

At present, about 17 entrance tests are held to fill nearly 32,000 undergraduate seats in medical colleges across the country. CBSE, state government and some private MCI colleges hold separate entrance examinations.

A single entrance test would reduce the “stress level of students”, who till now have been taking a minimum of seven tests for admission to medical colleges.

CET will cover all government, private and even minority institutions, a MCI official said.
