Boys steal the show from girls in ISC exams in Maharashtra

Students from Maharashtra have come out with flying colours in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Std X exam.

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations declared the ICSE and ISC (Std XII) results on Wednesday. While the girls have once again outdone boys in ICSE, the trend was reversed in the ISC results.

The pass percentage of Maharashtra at 99.76% is up by 0.21% from 2009 in the ICSE exam. The state pass percentage is also above the all-India pass percentage which stands at 98.31%, which is also up by 0.26% from last year.

Girls with a pass percentage of 99.84% have done better than boys (99.70%) in the state in ICSE. This is keeping with the all-India trend which also saw girls (98.77%) faring better than boys (97.95%).

“In India, the western region has the best pass percentage of 99.62%, followed by southern region which has a pass percentage of 99.44%. Among the other regions in India, the northern region has registered a passing percentage of 97.49, while the east has scored 98.31%,” said Gerry Arathoon, additional secretary and officiating chief executive and secretary.

The all-India pass percentage for ISC (97.11%) is also up by 0.03% from 2009. “However, the pass percentage for Maharashtra in ISC exam (96.42%) has dipped by 0.35%,” said Arathoon.

Though girls (98.26%) have done better than boys (96.17%) at the all-India level in ISC, this trend is reversed in Maharashtra where boys with a pass percentage of 96.54% have outshined girls who have registered a pass percentage of 96.27%.

“In ISC, the southern region has the best pass percentage (98.72%), followed by eastern region with pass percentage of 97.69%. The western region has 96.97% and the north has 96.34%,” said Arathoon.

At the all-India level, the ISC exam has been topped by two girls with a score of 98.75%. “It has been a cent per cent results with 427 students who appeared for ICSE and 139 for ISC,” said Norina Fernandes, principal, Lilavatibai Podar Senior Secondary High School, Santa Cruz.

The 259 students who appeared from Jamnabai Narsee School have passed. “The average percentile is 84.6%. Anuja Das and Abhishek Jain have scored 97.2 percentile and are the ICSE toppers from our school. In ISC, Arushi Thapar with 92.75% is the topper,” said Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal, Jamnabai Narsee School.
