Goa Forensic Science Laboratory, ICICI Lombard, Indian Air Force and central prisons are among the organisations that thronged the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU) campus in Gandhinagar to recruit from

students of the first batch of the university. During the 20-day recruitment process that concluded a few days back, almost 80% of the students of the first batch were absorbed by government and semi-government organisations.

A number of corporate groups, too, recruited the forensic science students for their companies.

Talking to DNA, the director general of the university, JM Vyas, said that some companies who took part in the placements process, had come to a university for recruitment for the first time.

Six students have been recruited by the newly-created Goa Forensic Laboratory, two by CMC India Pvt Ltd (the company specialises in fingerprint technology), one by the Indian Navy and one by the air force. ICICI Lombard hired students for psychological profiling.

"The students were offered annual salary packages of as high as Rs6 lakh," Vyas said. He also said that now that the students had been placed successfully, the university was flooded with enquiries about the GFSU and the courses offered here.

Meanwhile, GFSU has been granted recognition as a state university and may soon be given financial assistance by the University Grants Commission. "The UGC has recognised us as a state university and we will soon apply for financial assistance," Vyas said.

The university may start two new courses, namely, Forensic Nursing, and an MPhil course in Clinical Psychology. "We will seek permission to start these courses very soon," Vyas told DNA.

GFSU is one-of-a-kind university started to train students with a science background into forensic experts. The university offers various Masters courses as well.
