12 lakh want to steer engineering course

Experts suggest students should focus on time management and answer only those questions they are sure about to excel in the exam for admission to premier colleges in the country.

12 lakh want to steer engineering course

About 12 lakh engineering aspirants across the country will take the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) on Sunday.

Conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Examinations (CBSE), the exam score is accepted by premier engineering colleges of the country. Some institutes that accept the score are the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT), besides a few other central and state-funded institutions.

Last year, over 9.5 lakh students had appeared for the examination.

Students should be good at managing their time to crack the exam, more so since the number of candidates taking the test had increased considerably, experts said.

“The number of questions is likely to be about 30 per subject — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics,” Ajay Antony, faculty, TIME coaching institute, said. “Any wrong answer could prove extremely costly, since there are more than 11 lakh students competing for the seats,” he said.

Antony said candidates should answer only those questions they were sure of. “One should not invest more than four minutes on a question. There will be no time to revisit the answers. It is extremely important to get it right the first time itself,” he said.

The entrance examination will be held in two phases on Sunday. During the morning session, students will appear for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The score will be taken into account for admission to Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and Bachelor of Engineering (BE) courses.

The second session will have papers on Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing for students aspiring to join Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Planning courses.

Students looking for a seat in coveted institutes have devised strategies to clear the exam. “Compared to other exams, AIEEE will be lengthier,” Ashwin Anil Kamath, a student of Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College, said. “I will be focusing more on my speed and accuracy to excel in the exam. Over the last few days, I have taken many mock tests.”
