Co-founder of the viral #ALSIceBucketChallenge, Corey Griffin, died last Saturday in a diving accident in Nantucket, Massachussets. The accident happened hours after Griffin had managed to raise $100,000 for the cause that he started with his friend Peter Frates.

The Boston Globe reported that Griffin jumped into the water from a building on Staright Wharf, a popular diving spot on the island. He resurfaced once before drowning. 

Griffin, 27, started the Ice Bucket Challenge when Frate was struggling with the disease in 2012. The challenge went viral on social media creating awareness and raising funds for the neurodegenerative disease. Frates mourned the death of his friend.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has been the largest and most successful awareness and fund raising for the disease. The ALS Association said that as of Wednesday, it had raised $31.5 million in donations, a tremendous leap from $1.9 million they had raised by the same time last year.

The challenge has been done by several across the world from Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga, Chris Pratt, Charlie Sheen, Britney Spears, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, George W Bush and several others. The challenge was also taken up by Bollywood celebrities such as Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu
