Lake Natron is located in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, within the East African Rift Valley.

It is renowned for its striking red coloration, caused by the presence of microorganisms and minerals such as salt and sodium bicarbonate.

The lake has an extremely high pH level and high levels of alkalinity, making it inhospitable for most forms of life.

Lake Natron and its surrounding area are designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, recognising its ecological significance.
