7 foods that cause gas

Prashant Tamta

Gas is produced when healthy bacteria try to break down and digest the food.

It is a natural and normal phenomenon and is often considered healthy too. Check 7 foods that cause gas:

Beans: They contain a lot of raffinose, a complex sugar that body has trouble digesting. Soaking beans overnight can also help reduce gas.

Some vegetables: This includes broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage. They can cause gas due to complex sugar raffinose in them.

Whole grains: Such as wheat and oats contain fibre, raffinose and starch. Bacteria breaks them which leads to gas.

Dairy products: They contain a sugar called lactose. Low levels of enzyme lactase have difficulty digesting lactose which causes gas.

Onion: It contributes to gas due to presence of fructose when bacteria break it down in intestines.

Processed foods: Packaged goods such as breads and snack foods contain fructose and lactose. This combo can lead to increased gas.

Hard candy: It can cause you to swallow extra air. Many candies also use sorbitol. These 2 factors can cause extra gas.
