Pune: Expressing the need for toppling the Congress-NCP government which did not provide CCTV network to Pune city, BJP MLA Girish Bapat on Friday criticised Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde for his remarks that Pune is safe.Addressing a press conference at the BJP city unit office, Bapat said that such a statement by the Union home minister was nothing but playing with the sentiments of Punekars. He said that be it German Bakery blasts or low intensity blasts at Jungli Maharaj Road, the government is least bothered about the city's security despite it being on the terror radar. He pointed out that despite repeated demands on the floor of the House in the state assembly, the government only gave vague assurances.Bapat said that there have been reports of those involved in Naxal activities paying visits to the colleges in the city. He said that 8,670 naxalites have been arrested between 2008 and 2012 while 1,650 have surrendered during this period. A total of 1,189 police officers and constables lost their lives in ambushes and encounters with the naxals while weapons were seized at 3,950 places. Taking into account all these facts, Bapat said, "How can Shinde say that Pune is safe. This is nothing but applying salt to our wounds and Punekars would teach the Congress-NCP a befitting lesson in the elections."
