Bhaichung Bhutia and former Sikkim Minister RB Subba launched Hamro Sikkim Party today at Daramdin in West Sikkim.
Close to 10,000 people from far away places of Sikkim gathered at the party launch. Daramdin is the same place where Sikkim Democratic Front founder and Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling had launched his party back in 1993. While West Sikkim continues to be a strong hold of the SDF, Bhaichung Bhutia, along with his party chose this place for the party launch with a view to give a tough fight to SDF in the upcoming assembly polls in Sikkim due in 2019.
Last month, Bhutia had launched his party in Delhi. Speaking to PTI, Bhaichung had said, " I felt like an outsider" in the Trinamool Congress". Bhutia said that even after being part of West Bengal politics and playing for top Bengal clubs for years, he could not get rid of the "outsider" tag and now he had returned to his roots. "I was dropped from the top in the TMC. Let's not forget that when I contested from Siliguri, there was an outsider tag on me as well.
Bhaichung earlier was part of TMC, and became distant from them during the Gorkhaland agitation.
