The movie had opened to mixed reviews.

Vijay's Puli was embroiled in some issues the day before its release, but now it looks like the film has turned out to be a big grosser at the box office. The gross worldwide collections of the film from the date of release till now i.e. its first week, is Rs 71 crore, say the producers of the film.

The movie was panned by critics and opened to mixed reviews. However, it was marketed as a family film and one that would appeal to kids. The graphics in the film seemed to appeal to children, especially the talking bird, Lilliputians and the like.

The movie stars Shruti Haasan, Sridevi, Sudeep along with Hansika Motwani. It has been directed by Chimbu Deven. This is the director's first major hit. So far he has made smaller films, though all in the fantasy genre.

Actor Vijay also has a good market in Kerala as compared to Andhra Pradesh. The movie has done well in both states.
